Preservatives keep skincare products long lasting?
To ensure that your cream does not go mouldy, or (wrong) bacteria do not have a chance to multiply in your lotion, preservatives are added to skincare products.
Parabens have traditionally been substances that keep a cream ‘good’ for a long time. In recent years, there has been increasing debate about the use of parabens in food and cosmetics, as research has shown that it are Endocrine Disruptive Chemicals (EDC) that are harmful to health.
Parabens, which come in four different forms (ethyl, methyl, butyl, and propyl paraben), are pseudohormones, also known as xenoestrogens. They resemble the female hormone estrogen and enter the bloodstream through the skin.
There have been several scientific studies that have shown the danger of parabens to health. There is also discussion between toxicologists and endocrinologists. Some claim that it is such small amounts of parabens that our body can easily process it. Others indicate that even the smallest amounts have a negative influence on the hormone balance, the body and health in general, or for example on unborn children in the womb.
How can you recognize parabens?
You will often see one or more of the four parabens mentioned at the very bottom of the ingredients list on the packaging of your product. Ethylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben and/or propylparaben are then mentioned.
Phenoxyethanol on the blacklist
Another preservative widely used instead of parabens is phenoxyethanol. It is widely used in semi-natural skincare products, but is a substance that people develop an allergic reaction to more and more. The permitted amount of phenoxyethanol has therefore been adjusted downwards over the years. Natural cosmetics certifying bodies such as Ecocert and Soil Association have even blacklisted phenoxyethanol.
The good thing is, there are alternatives to harmful preservatives. Witlof Skincare uses the safe, natural substances benzyl alcohol, dehydoracetic acid, potassium sorbate and citric acid, in addition to high concentrations of antioxidants, such as from vitamin C. Our airless packaging also helps to keep the products in good condition. Completely natural and completely safe.
